Well I've just got some news on a much more solemn note. My cousin is in the Chippewa Falls, WI marching band (they were at the Irondale [MN] competition) and they had a competition in Whitewater, Wisconsin this weekend. On the way home one of the buses was involved in a crash with a semi truck and there are fatalities involved. My cousin was lucky enough to be ok. This news is on locally and has even made some national stations already. All of us being in a band know how close of a bond each one of us shares with every member of the program. Our program experienced the death of one of my great trombone friends who I marched next to in a car accident this last year. I think sometimes we tend to lose sight of the importance of what marching band is all about when we focus on the competition aspect of it. That is all I know for now and I'll be updating as I find out more. Keep the band and the members of those lost in your prayers. God bless
We know now that at least 5 have been killed and many more injured. Here is the story:
(WCCO) Osseo, WI Interstate 94 near Eau Claire, WI, is still shut down after a deadly bus crash near there.
A charter bus carrying high school students from Chippewa Falls, WI, crashed into a semi truck early today, reportedly killing several students and injuring up to ten others.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says the accident happened around 2 a.m. about five miles west of Osseo, WI.
Investigators say the bus hit the semi, the truck jack knifed, then the bus crashed into it.
CBS Radio is reporting that five people were killed in the wreck. But a spokesman with the state patrol could not confirm that number. He told WCCO 4 News only that "up to" five people were dead.
60 high school students were on the bus at the time.
Luther Hospital in Eau Claire said 11 patients were brought to its emergency room. As of 8 a.m., nine patients were treated and released from the hospital. One was admitted and one had died.
The state patrol says the students had just finished playing in a band competition in Whitewater.
The students who were not injured were taken back to the high school in Chippewa Falls.
Police say Interstate 94 is still shut down for a seven-mile stretch between Foster and Oseeo.
Investigators plan to hold a news conference at Noon today to update reporters with the latest news.
